Introducing Oh, What a Day! – Little Red Kettle’s New Interactive Touring Play
A brand new adventure is on its way to primary schools across Waterford!
Little Red Kettle is delighted to introduce Oh, What a Day!, our latest Interactive Touring Play (ITP), written and directed by Joe Meagher.
Packed with humour, imagination and plenty of unexpected twists, this year’s production takes children on a wild adventure filled with unusual characters, unexpected challenges and a race against time.
With children at the heart of the action, Oh, What a Day! brings storytelling, creativity and participation directly into primary schools, inviting young audiences to become part of the adventure themselves.
Oh, What a Day! – The Story
What starts as an ordinary weekend for best friends Billy Bonkers and Milly Madasaboot quickly turns into an adventure neither could have imagined!
When the dastardly Dr Hector Kryptonfactor unveils his latest invention, the Time Transplondisizer, he threatens to trap the entire world in Monday morning forever. And nobody wants that!
To save the day, Billy and Milly must set off on an extraordinary quest to gather four very unusual items. As Dr Kryptonfactor announces:
To escape my tricky time traps bind
Each of these items you must find; The flower of the Wacky Wowwow tree,
A hair from the mane of a fearsome lion,
Some water fresh from the heart of the sea
And a shooting star from the belt of Orion.
From unexpected encounters to seemingly impossible tasks, the pair will need plenty of imagination, determination and a little help from their friends if they’re going to succeed.
But will Billy and Milly manage to save the day before time runs out?
The Children Are the Stars of the Show
What makes Little Red Kettle’s Interactive Touring Play special is that the children themselves become the characters in the story.
Rather than watching a traditional performance, pupils are invited to step into different roles, helping to create the action as the story unfolds.
Guided by the LRK performance team, the children receive gentle prompts, whispered instructions and support throughout their involvement. There’s no need to learn lines, prepare costumes or rehearse beforehand.
Teachers can even find themselves becoming part of the fun!
This approach allows children to experience theatre from a completely different perspective, encouraging confidence, imagination, teamwork and a sense of achievement.
Learning Through Storytelling and Play
Each year, Little Red Kettle’s Interactive Touring Play explores themes that are relevant to children’s lives and the world around them.
Through its humour and imaginative adventures, Oh, What a Day! explores friendship, teamwork, perseverance and the importance of not giving up when things become difficult.
As Billy and Milly face unexpected challenges, they discover that solutions aren’t always straightforward and that asking for help, helping others and trying again can make all the difference.
While the play is designed to entertain, it also creates opportunities for meaningful learning. For teachers, the story can spark classroom conversations about problem-solving, resilience, friendship and dealing with setbacks.
By combining theatre and participation, Oh, What a Day! gives children a fun and memorable way to explore ideas that extend beyond the performance itself.
Meet the Team Behind Oh, What a Day!
Written and directed by Joe Meagher, Oh, What a Day! brings together a talented creative team for another season of interactive theatre in primary schools.
Joining Joe are Natasha Everitt, Shauna Farrell, Cillian Jacob and David Marchant, who will guide young participants through the story, supporting them as they step into different roles and bring the performance to life.
Deirdre Dwyre, our Production Designer, brings the production’s visual world to life by creating the colourful backdrops, costumes and props that transform school halls into imaginative theatrical spaces.
Behind the scenes, preparations are well underway, with the team already having come together for an initial table read ahead of rehearsals beginning in November.
We’ll also be introducing the team individually in our upcoming Meet the Cast feature, giving everyone a chance to get to know the people behind the production before they head out on the road.
Bringing Oh, What a Day! to Schools
Little Red Kettle’s Interactive Touring Play brings live theatre directly into primary schools, making the experience accessible to children in their own school environment.
